The Gift of Community: How Circonomy Started

The Gift of Community: How Circonomy Started

, by Circonomy, 2 min reading time

This Christmas, we’re bringing back our roots of how Circonomy started: community.

Sustainability isn't just a buzzword for us; it's about fostering enduring change and support – including community. Our journey began in 2013, when our founder Yas Grigaliunas created the World’s Biggest Garage Sale – a neighbourhood garage sale with the purpose of raising money for cancer charities. This cause was dear to Yas’ heart, and she was on a mission to make a difference.

Yas realised that sitting in many Australian homes laid dormant goods – just waiting for a second chance at life. What if we could rehome these goods and give them a renewed purpose? Yas brought together a collection of products for this event, with lots of generous donations to support the cause.

Along with 50 passionate volunteers, Yas hosted the inaugural World’s Biggest Garage Sale event, raising an impressive $15,000 for Smiling for Smiddy charity in just one day! This set the stage for annual events aimed at repurposing dormant goods and supporting charitable causes.

In 2015, one of WBGS’ biggest years, customers began to wonder: “Could you do this all the time?”

Fast forward to 2017, WBGS was officially established as a company. With Newscorp supporting our mission, we had our biggest event at the time raising a whopping $150K in a day!

Since then, Circonomy has evolved from a humble garage sale into something much grander. Officially established in 2022, we've partnered with numerous leading retailers and businesses to offer Australians access to affordable, high-quality goods. More importantly, we've found a way to give back to our community through circularity.

Through our work, we've had the privilege of supporting flood-stricken communities, giving a second life to goods by redirecting them to organisations and individuals in need, and providing education around the concept of circularity.

We're excited to make an even greater impact on our community and demonstrating how circularity and sustainability are the keys to a brighter future as we transition to a net-zero economy.
